On December 22nd, the Metropolis was packed. The pit was full. It was almost a who is who of concert photographers there to have one last opportunity to shoot Canada’s favorite post-hardcore band, Alexisonfire. I had written a review of my top concerts of 2012 before this show. I should of waited until after as this one would of definitely made the cut. The energy on stage was… wow. The guys were giving their all for one of their last shows…ever.
It was a challenge shooting them. With the changing lights (and not always for the better), trying to grab some fun shots of 5 guys who are all over the place can be hectic… but its pretty damn fun!
You end up picking a side and waiting there to get your image. With so much movement, there is no point in following a band member around for a shot. Let the action come to you. Finally having my second camera body with me, I was able to shoot with 2 lenses. Instead of having the usual 24-70 and 70-200, I switched the 70-200 for the 16-35. Knowing that there are 5 guys on stage and how energetic their music is, having a wider lens would give me the opportunity for … uh… wider shots (me smart). Looking back, I probably should of ditched the 24-70 and had one long and one ultra wide lens.
I’d love to say I look forward to shooting these guys again, but I doubt that is going to happen soon. Sad. They were awesome.
This was probably one of the hardest shows I’ve shot to get some shoe images. Not only because I need to first focus on getting out my media’s images (work before pleasure), but each time I had a decent shot, I probably had under a second to pull it off. Here are the best of the ones I got 🙂
You can read the full show review and see the images on CornershopStudios. My black and whites I have here are up in colour on the media’s site.
Do you have a need for some live show photography? Band promo images or portraits? Drop me a line and we can chat about your ideas. 🙂
