Alessia Cara spending some face time with her fans

I started my 2016 concert coverage at the Alessia Cara show at Montreal’s Corona Theatre.  Who is Alessia Cara?  A much talked about up and coming artist.  She is a Canadian born singer and songwriter currently signed to Def Jam Records.   She only has one album, Know-it-all, released last November.

She is one of the most hyped new artists these days, and the sold out Corona was a testament to that… as was being asked by 3 medias to cover the show.  I usually show up a little after the doors to the venue open when it is a sold out show to make my way as close as I can.  Getting close to the stage wasn’t possible with the already densely packed floor.

Photo notes

Most of the night was spent with a 70-200mm lens.  Anything shorter shooting from select spots gets very repetitive.  The lights were nice, although pretty standard.  In the range of ISO 3200, 1/200 at f/2.8.  The artist moves very well, but she is new to the stage and it all felt a bit repetitive and rehearsed.  You can see her genuine smile, and time will only help makes things more natural.

This was the first show of her first tour… keeping that in mind, it was a good shoot to break off my trigger finger rust.

While her set was fairly short (approx 1 hour), she had some great energy, using the entire stage, often reaching out to her fans (and the masses of cell phones).  Great energy, great voice.  Can’t wait to see how her 2016 will turn out!
